Beer #3609.2: Samuel Smith Taddy Porter

Oh geez…I’ve had this one; albeit two years ago. I guess that’s going to happen from time to time.

I originally had this at a great steakhouse in Raleigh, NC: The Angus Barn. They have great French Onion soup and they will Oscar a steak for you (crab and asparagus…so tasty).

On to the beer!

This one is listed as a BJCP representative style for English Porter. Style 13C for you nerds looking it up.

I originally gave it a 4 out of 5 because I liked it and that rating stands today.

It smells of dark fruit, slight toffee, and of a general richness. There is a slight woodiness and strong raisin notes that would carry through to the taste.

I thought it was black but my SRM app thingy told me I was wrong so felt like this:

It tasted toasty with that persistent raisin undertone. Again a bit woody, but in a hoppy, not barrel sense. It was definitely cheated to the malty side of the balance with a sweet but not cloying finish.

4/5 would drink again.
