Beer #3609.3: River Rat 803 IPA

Not sure what happened to my beer count on Untappd. I lost one somewhere. Oh well, we’ll just stay on #3609 forever (or until tomorrow).

River Rat is an interesting brewery for us. Our kid joined the Army in 2017 and did basic training at Fort Jackson just around the corner (across town) from this brewery in Columbia, SC.

So while it’s a bit to far to drop in on, I happy to see it on the shelves in NC as it reminds me of the lingering moments after basic training where the kid was the best version of himself that we’d seen.

On to the beer!

This IPA is probably a bit older than it should be, but it was still very good with lots of hop flavors and a lower than usual bitterness from something sporting 60 IBUs.

The nose (wow, that sound pretentious) is full of grassy, floral, and light citrus notes. There is a background of grainy malt mixed in there as well.

It’s a brilliant copper with a cream head that carries legs.

Surprisingly (or maybe due to it’s age) it has a nice malty backbone and piney, floral hops with a lingering, but not overbearing bitterness at the end.

A very good IPA I’d like to try again a bit fresher.

3.5/5
