Out at Raleigh Brewing and I don’t get out this way much. It’s an odd location in relation to the Quay. They’ve got a new outdoor beer garden thing in their parking lot, so that’s a thing.
Gawsie Gurk is a small batch Wee Heavy aged in oak barrels. Scotch Ales, from light to wee heavy are by far my favorite class of beer and so I don’t get to try new ones all that often, since I’ve usually already tried it.
This one is a bit peaty and the alcohol comes through in the smell. There are some faint legs in the cream colored head that cascade down into the dark brown beer.
The alcohol is really pronounced on the front and back of the taste. There is a sharper bitterness than I’m used to from these. Perhaps from the oak aging?
It’s good but not a standout but I think I might be overly critical of these types of beers.
