Beer #???: Andy! You Goonie!

Hey you guys! Out watching Goonies at Mason Jar Lager Company in Varina. Drinking their schwartzbier. Smells of toffee with chocolate in the background. Very little hop but a slight ester smell. Pours a very dark brown with a thin head. Sweet almost cloying but doesn't cross that line. Slightly roasty, but very toasty and... Continue Reading →

Beer #??: Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold

Reinheitsgebot! Time to get our German on! I've got pictures of a trip to Berlin from a few years ago, but considering the beer and the style both had Munich in their name, it didn't feel right using a picture of the wrong city. So I went with the most stereotypical German picture Google could... Continue Reading →

Beer #3609.3: River Rat 803 IPA

Not sure what happened to my beer count on Untappd. I lost one somewhere. Oh well, we'll just stay on #3609 forever (or until tomorrow). River Rat is an interesting brewery for us. Our kid joined the Army in 2017 and did basic training at Fort Jackson just around the corner (across town) from this... Continue Reading →

Beer #3609.1: LET’S DO THIS!

One beer review a day. Starting today. Maybe. I hope. I'm going to use a variety of tools here: Untappd: http://www.untappd.com BJCP Beer Scoresheet: https://www.bjcp.org/docs/SCP_BeerScoreSheet.pdf 33 Bottles of Beer: 33books.com These first few will be a bit pedestrian as I continue to prepare for the daunting task of Certified Cicerone.

Beer #3512.1: I’m really bad at this…

Alright, the pressures (in the background) of Cicerone prep are nagging at me. Instead of enjoying a beer a sharing it here for no one to read, I'm worried about drinking the right beers to prep. I need to take a deep breath and just get to posting regularly.

Beer #3494: Pohjala Italobanger

Great beer from Tallin, Estonia (picture below from a cruise we took back in 2015). Really starts off as a typical stout, but the lingering taste of grape skin and apricot make this a wonderful beer. I'm looking forward to cellaring this beer and revisiting it in a year or so.

Beer #3492: Wicked Weed Dark Arts

Going to try and structure this one a bit better than my last. Pours dark brown almost black. SRM is clearly above 40. No head retention. Smell is low in both maltiness and hops. Plum is almost overpowering on the nose. Low hop flavor. Grainy malt flavor. Raisin that bleeds into brown sugar aftertaste. Very... Continue Reading →
