Two. Years. That's how long it's been since I wrote something here. We've bought a new house. Bo has started at a new school (twice) and Max and MJ are still around (thankfully). I took the written Cicerone portion and it went about as well as you would imagine without much studying. This platform helped... Continue Reading →
One of two! Audacity of Hops complete!
Well...I finished the book, The Audacity of Hops. I enjoyed it although it read more of a summary of individual brewery start ups than a fully cohesive narrative. There was an attempt to weave some folks in and out of the story, but the interconnections were thin and felt forced. With that criticism aside, it was... Continue Reading →
Cicerone Prep Month #1
Probably not a good sign that I'm writing a blog post about monthly prep 4 days into the first month already and one month behind where I said I wanted to start, but it is what it is. I think this first month I'll mix it up and focus on the brewing process and ingredients... Continue Reading →
Well that didn’t work…
That whole "blog post a day" thing in August didn't work. I wrapped up my beer tasting class. So the only thing between me and the Cicerone exam is...well...me. I think I'm going to take 9 months to study on my own. Two months for each regional style (Belgian, English, German, American) and then a... Continue Reading →
Brewery #166: Oaklyn Springs Brewery
New brewery in the Quay, which is always welcome. Takes the place of the old Lincoln Brewing which went...somewhere. Great tap line up as they get their own up and running. Had their saison which was very good and will make a great base for all sorts of experimenting. We got to talk to the... Continue Reading →
Beer #3626: Triple C Grill Friend
I have a grill I should pull out and use more than I do. Big ol' manly grill. My favorite grill is this one the size of a notebook we take camping. Just big enough to cook up dinner for Bo and Nelly and no one else. Just like I like most of my trips... Continue Reading →
Beer #???: Andy! You Goonie!
Hey you guys! Out watching Goonies at Mason Jar Lager Company in Varina. Drinking their schwartzbier. Smells of toffee with chocolate in the background. Very little hop but a slight ester smell. Pours a very dark brown with a thin head. Sweet almost cloying but doesn't cross that line. Slightly roasty, but very toasty and... Continue Reading →
Beer #3537.1: Still bad at this
July is shot already. Got too much travel to post regularly. Going to try an August challenge of doing one beer a day. I should be able to pull that off... ...sure...
Beer #3512.1: I’m really bad at this…
Alright, the pressures (in the background) of Cicerone prep are nagging at me. Instead of enjoying a beer a sharing it here for no one to read, I'm worried about drinking the right beers to prep. I need to take a deep breath and just get to posting regularly.
Beer #3489: Bombshell Brewing Saison de Bombshell
A nice saison. Well balanced between the phenols and esters. Not a lot of herbal notes and low carbonation. A bit of doughy malt. Picture unrelated.
